One of 3 pairs of lengendary KLH Model Nine Full Range Electrostatic speakers designed by A.A Janszen, donated to his son David Janszen by Robert DiIorio of MACANDPCREPAIRS.COM in NYC.

klhnine_prototype

These early Nines had only four bass transducers per each complete 6ft. panel whereas the later production units contained 10 11x11-inch bass transducers and 1 high frequency transcucer per left or right panel. Blue high frequency transducers found in some Nines were of the RTR manufactured type whereas the original Janszen designs were black in color and of superior performance. (this panel has the tweeter removed). RTR units resulted in sub-par performance.

klh nine production

Showing six of the ten bass transducers & the single high frequency transducer in the commercial units producded by KLH.

klh bias

Bias voltage step-up and frequency dividing network being modified with new rectifiers, resistors and capacitors were needed. Most descrete components will change value due to age or stop working outright. Notice there is one solid state rectifier wired backwards indicating this "can" was worked on previously. Completed modification was then immersed in beeswax. If the top surface of the wax was seen bulging upon inspection this generally meant the Nines were over driven, possibly abused.

soundlab compare

Size comparison SoundLab A-3 to KLH Model Nine. A-3's appear larger than they actually are due to closeness and angle of camera. Smaller zA2.1 is another new Janszen hybrid design with very good sound
